What type of mask blocks coronavirus most effectively?

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – As public health officials repeatedly reinforce the message that masking can help stop the spread of coronavirus, a variety of masks have flooded the market.

So which mask is best?

A new Duke University study tested a variety of masks to see which ones are most effective at blocking respiratory drops to protect the wearer and those around them.

BEST FACES:

  • N95 surgery. This mask is manufactured according to surgical standards to give face tightness. However, because of a shortage, most experts ask members of the public to avoid purchasing these masks so that they can be intended for medical professionals.
  • Three-layer simple surgical mask. Widely available and found to provide the next highest level of protection.
  • Cotton. Researchers have tested several different types of cotton masks and found most of them are quite effective, but are best described as “cotton-polypropylene-cotton masks.”
    ;
  • WORKING FACES:

  • Fleece: Research shows that this type of facial mask is worse than not wearing a mask at all. Researchers found that wool veil – for example, the wool of the neck – actually breaks down respiratory droplets into droplets rather than blocking them, releasing a large number of individual droplets. into the air. Those smaller droplets are lighter in weight and therefore stay in the air longer. Considering that tiny particles fly in the air longer than large ones (large ones sink faster), using such a mask can be counterproductive.
  • Bandanas are also considered ineffective, though not as bad as not wearing a mask.
  • Knitted: These masks are ineffective in suppressing respiratory drops.
  • Dr. Anthony Cardillo, a Los Angeles-based ER specialist who was not involved in the study, told Eyewitness News that his clinic advised patients to wear simple surgical masks when in public. If those aren’t available, a cotton mask is a good alternative, he said.

    He added that people should avoid masks with valves in them, even N95 masks, as those openings allow droplets to be exhaled.

    “So we’d like to advise everyone, everyone to wear a simple surgical mask when you’re out. If you can’t touch … If you have to wear a mask, a face mask. Three-layer cotton masks are good third.
