NEW YORK (AP) – Walmart has reversed course, announcing that it will return ammunition and handguns for display in US stores.
On Thursday, the nation’s largest retailer said it had removed the items from stores due to “civil unrest” in some parts of the country. However, guns and ammunition are still for sale in stores, only shoppers cannot see them.
But on Friday, Walmart said the items had been restored for display as the unrest remains isolated.
The moves come after days of protests, vandalism and an overnight curfew in Philadelphia after police shot dead a black man with a history of mental health problems.
“After civil unrest earlier this week resulted in damage to some of our stores, in line with actions we took over the summer, we asked the stores to ship guns. and ammunition from the sales floor to a safe location at the back of the cautious store, “Walmart said in a statement. The decision is made to start bringing these products back to the marketplace today. ”
The retailer, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, sells guns at about half of its 4,700 stores.
