According to one report, the scientists collected human waste samples from sewers in the San Francisco Bay Area to identify “hot spot” areas where coronavirus is most common.
The scientists told the Bay Area’s FOX 2 that evidence of coronavirus infection was often present in the waste samples, and they decided that sewer sampling would be more efficient than going door-to-door to obtain human samples people.

Wastewater treatment agencies from three Gulf counties are supporting the project, with a fourth district expected to be involved soon, the report said.
Samples are collected at a “drainage warehouse”, where waste from multiple sewers is concentrated in a single pipe or treatment station. Scientists told FOX 2, the samples could include waste from a few thousand to several hundred thousand residents.
