Special grocery store Trader Joe’s confirmed on Friday that they are in the early stages of trying to bring their first store in Chattanooga.
“We are very interested in bringing a store to the area,” said Trader Joe̵7;s Kenyan Public Relations Manager Friend-Daniel.
Construction plans submitted to the city of Chattanooga show the store could be reached at 2111 Gunbarrel Road, a site formerly known as AAA Chattanooga.
The retail space blueprint by Neuhoff Taylor Architects is suggested for the reference of Trader Joe’s website.
A demolition permit was issued for the address and a site building permit shows the construction of retail space in a $ 1.95 million project. The license cites the construction of a “commercial structure.”
Chattanooga developer Bassam Issa said on Friday that he is not ready to give tenant notices.
A building permit says work on the shell of the new structure is expected to be completed by the end of March 2021.
You-Daniel said “since we are too early in the process, there is no more information to share at this time.”
Earlier this year, she said the company was considering locating new store locations in Tennessee, including Chattanooga.
The Monrovia, California-based company is “always looking for great locations to match Trader Joe’s,” the spokesperson said. She said the company’s goal each year is to open 20 to 30 stores.
Trader Joe’s had stores in Knoxville, Nashville and Germantown, outside of Memphis, in Tennessee. The company opened a second location in Nashville last year, around the same time a site debuted in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Nationwide, the retailer operates more than 500 stores, which they bill as “your neighborhood grocery”. Compared to a typical grocery store with around 50,000 items, Trader Joe’s has around 4,000 items, most of which carry one of their own brand names. Trader Joe’s offers gourmet dishes, organic food, vegetarian food, unusual frozen foods, imported foods, domestic and imported alcohol and beer, where local law allows. .
Trader Joe’s is still on the wish list of many Chattanoogans.
In 2017, a survey of 1,100 people from the nonprofit redevelopment team in downtown River City Co. It shows that Trader Joe’s market is one of the most coveted retailers in Chattanooga. Clothing retailer Urban Outfitters is different.
Additionally, a Facebook page, “Bring Trade Joe’s to Chattanooga”, has received over 6,700 likes as of Friday.
“We, as a community, must show Trader Joe’s that we want and will support a store here on Chattanooga!”, The Facebook Page said.
The commercial publication Winsight Grocery Business reported last month that Trader Joe’s is actively opening new stores despite a pandemic, citing a location in Wayne, New Jersey. Winsight said the Trader Joe’s website lists new “coming soon” stores in Coral Springs, Florida, Queen Creek, Arizona, Richmond, Virginia and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
