Time – even as short as a minute – is what you make of it, US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared to have said Wednesday night.
The New York Democrat responded on Twitter about reports that she will have only 60 seconds to speak when she joins next week in the Democratic Party’s predominantly online congress.
Ocasio-Cortez quoted “Moments of God”, by the late civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, his poem is a commentary on the brevity of life.
“I only have a minute. 60 seconds in there. Coerced by me, I did not choose it, But I knew I had to use it, ”the poem writes.
THE DEMOCRATIC SPEAKER CONTROLLER SCHEDULE IS RETURNED: THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
“Give the account if I overdo it. Suffering if I lose it. Just a tiny minute, but forever in it. “
Some responded to Ocasio-Cortez̵7;s post accusing the Democratic leader of trying to strangle the congresswoman – a progressive person who backs independent US Senator Bernie Sanders in Vermont for the presidency instead of the party’s standard bearer, former Vice President Joe Biden.
“What a slap for progress,” wrote one Twitter user. “It’s a constant disregard for us. They think we’ll shrink [out]. They are wrong. We’re not going anywhere. With @AOC as our leader, we are just getting started. Now that the team has been re-elected, we’re ready to make a ruckus in the halls of Congress. “
“Others should end early then speak at the end [theirs] that their time will be spent with @AOC, ”wrote another.
Some noted that the short time allocation for Ocasio-Cortez had come despite her victory and the two other “Squad Squad” allies – the US Senator. Rashida Tlaib in Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota – in the Democrats’ primary elections respectively as they advance to the general election in November. The fourth member of the Squad, US Senator Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, will face a primary election next month.
“Democracy has no clue how many tough Democrats are abandoning them just because of their ignorant left and right spell,” wrote one Twitter user. “The strategy that made Trump win in 2016 is being broken by DNC. They are digging their own grave ”.
One Twitter user noted that speakers in the previous conference ignored the short amount of time they were granted.
“[Bill] Clinton was given 15 minutes in 1988 ”, the user wrote. “He talked 33 and got booed on stage. Obama spoke for 17 minutes (including stopping to clap his hands 33 times!), It wasn’t even shown on internet and he made us believe we could change the world. I can’t wait for 60 seconds of AOC ”.
Democrats will convene starting next Monday through August 20, mostly online – but with the event being held in Milwaukee, the city has been chosen to host a more casual meeting on July before the coronavirus pandemic caused them to reschedule and completely change their plans. .
Ocasio-Cortez is scheduled to speak on Tuesday night, after Sanders speaks on Monday night.
Other speakers for the week will include former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
This weekend, Biden and executive friend Kamala Harris are expected to accept the party’s nomination for president and vice president, heading for a November confrontation with President Trump and Vice President Pence.
