Thai Airways discloses the ‘flight to nowhere’ for religious worshipers

(CNN) – Anxious traveler often finds himself praying on a plane.

A new Thai Airways flight, however, plans to highlight the on-flight spirituality in a very different way.

The airline will launch a one-time flight dubbed “THAI magical flight experience campaign” through some of Thailand’s holiest Buddhist religious sites, with passengers chanting mantras along the way.

Thai Airways’ “to nowhere” excursion flight will last for three hours on November 30 and flies through 99 Buddhist sites across the country.

The plane will take off from Bangkok and pass through Ayutthaya, Sukothai, Chonburi, Surat Thani and other destinations. In total, passengers will fly through 31
of Thailand’s 77 provinces before returning to the Thai capital.

On the plane, Dr. Khata Chinbunchon, a well-known fortune teller and religious history expert, will lead the flight’s recitation of Buddhist mantras.

Wiwat Piyawiroj, vice president of Thai Airways, said in a statement that the flight is part of the Thai government’s plan to promote domestic tourism in the country.

Thailand, like many other parts of the world, has seen a significant drop in tourism revenue amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

While scenic flights to places like Grand Canyon and Nazca Lines have been around for a long time, “flight to nowhere” is the more recent fashion. As airlines struggled to cover their losses and travelers were besieged by closed borders, these sightseeing flights became an option to meet in between.
And it’s not just the flight that travelers miss. Singapore’s Tourism Board has announced two “tours to nowhere,” with no calls and half capacity.

Economy Class tickets on the “Magic Flight Experience” start at 5,999 baht ($ 193) for Economy Class and 9,999 baht ($ 321) for Premium Class. You can make a reservation by calling +66 (0) 2 356 1515.
