Sean Connery, who is best known for his role as James Bond, has passed away at the age of 90, his family said on Saturday. Actors, people played 007 in seven films started with Dr. No in 1962, dying in his sleep in the Bahamas. The actor has “been unwell for a while,” his son Jason told the BBC.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Connery has had an acting career spanning decades and including many award-winning performances. He won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in The Untouchables in 1988 and won three Golden Globe Awards. He also starred alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, in which he played the role of Jones’ father.

Connery was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. He’s largely retired since that decade, but he played the Bond role for the last time through voicing in video game adaptations from From Russia. With Love in 2005. His last role was to voice the 2012 Scottish animated film Sir Billi.

Over the years, he appeared in dozens of films, working with directors from Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston to Steven Spielberg and Brian De Palma. In his pre-Bond work, he is perhaps best known for his Disney movies about elves, Darby O’Gill and The Little People of 1959.

It is his appearance in Dr. No, the first big screen adaptation of one of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, made Connery a superstar. He left the role, ceded the title 007 to George Lazenby for a movie, then back in Diamonds Are Forever in 1971.

Connery made a comeback once again as Bond, starring in Never Say Never Again (a remake of Thunderball) in 1983, reportedly taking his name from Connery’s earlier disapproval of returned to the role, and then stopped working.

Though other notable actors, including Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, have been plays James BondConnery has been considered 007 Definitely. In his later years, he performed almost iconic. Tribute to Connery

Also condolences to another Bond actor, George Lazenby, who first entered the role after the great success of Connery. He notes that “Sean Connery as James Bond has personally inspired me but seems to encapsulate an era.”

“Every day on set with Sean Connery is a lesson in acting on the screen,” said Sam Neill, who co-starred with Connery in 1990’s The Hunt for Red October. “But all that charisma and power – that’s totally unique to Sean.”

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister, said: “It is heartbreaking to hear that Sir Sean Connery passed away this morning. “Our nation today mourns one of her most beloved sons.”

Roger Moore, successful actor Connery in the role of Bond in 1973 Live and die, died in 2017.

Connery’s representative did not respond to a request for comment.
