After all warnings against inhalation of coronavirus drops, is the answer to fighting the pandemic being an inhaler? Scientists at the University of California San Francisco have developed an aerosol formulation made from nanocrystals that resemble antibodies that can stop viruses from infecting cells.

Researchers found that certain nano-bodies, from llamas and camels, were able to functionally adhere to the mutant protein found outside of SARS-CoV-2 and inactivate chemical it. The synthetic versions of these nanoparticles are called AeroNabs.
Taken once a day, AeroNabs can provide strong, reliable protection against SARS-CoV-2 until vaccination is available, the researchers said. said in their findings published on bioRxiv.
Nanobodies are immune-like proteins found in llamas and camels. They are much smaller than human antibodies, which makes them easy to manipulate and modify in the lab. Also, unlike human antibodies, nanoparticles can be mass-produced easily and inexpensively.
UCSF̵7;s team tested about two billion synthetic nanoparticles to find those that could bind to the mutant protein of SARS-CoV-2, then re-engineered them to be even stronger. During the research, they discovered that the nanoscubes were still effective in aerosol form, so they could be used via inhalers or nasal sprays with a shelf life.
“Much more effective than wearable personal protective equipment, we consider AeroNabs as a molecular form of PPE that could serve as an important deterrent until vaccines deliver. a more permanent solution for COVID-19, ”said AeroNabs co-inventor Peter Walter, PhD, professor of biochemistry and physiology at UCSF and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Nasal inhalers or sprays will have to go through clinical trials before being marketed. If these trials are successful, AeroNabs could be widely available as an inexpensive, over-the-counter drug for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
