Scientists have discovered what they say may be the smallest free-floating planet ever discovered. The planet was discovered in the middle of the Milky Way by researchers at the University of Warsaw, and is estimated to be about the size of Earth and Mars.
Floating or “fake” planets do not orbit the stars and are notoriously difficult to detect. Researchers have used a technique called “microlensing”, which allows scientists to find planets that they cannot observe. “The pseudo-planets do not orbit the stars, they have no gravity to any of the host stars. They do not emit any visible radiation, so they cannot be detected using traditional astrophysics techniques, ”explained Przemek Mroz, one of the co-authors of the article on Twitter.
