Police arrested a North Dakota man in connection with the mourning of two police officers in Delafield.

The suspect, Nathanael Benton, 23, of Fargo, is also wanted for a murder in North Dakota stemming from a Sunday shooting in Fargo.

The man fled the scene of the shooting near Holiday Inn Express on Golf Road in Delafield at around 1:40 a.m.

Delafield Sheriff Erik Kehl said that at about 11:15 a.m., a resident noticed a suspicious person on a vacant lot in the southeast corner of the city, less than 1.6 km from the shooting scene, so he call the police. The police arrested the suspect and confirmed it was Benton, Kehl said.

At 11:45 a.m., he says he doesn’t know if Benton has been found with the gun on his body and isn’t sure if he’s been found with any injuries.

He said law enforcement will hold a press conference at 2:30 pm

According to the Waukesha and Kehl County Sheriff’s Offices, both officers, one from Delafield and the other from Hartland, appeared to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Kehl said this morning he spoke to Officer Delafield and he was “doing as well as could be hoped for.”

“I am grateful to hear that the officers involved in the shooting were okay and that there were non-life-threatening injuries,” Delafield Mayor Kent Attwell said in a statement. “They and their families are in our hearts and thoughts in this difficult time. I am confident that our Police Department and the surrounding law enforcement agencies will find the suspect. and bring him to justice. “

The other two were arrested shortly after the shooting, Kehl said, but he doesn’t have any information about their connection with Benton and is unsure what charges they could face, if any. .

“I think that is still being determined,” he said.

A press release from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office said both uniformed officers were shot when meeting the suspect early Friday morning.

Highway 83 is still closed, as is Golf Road and Silvernail Road.

Nearby schools closed or delayed opening times. All schools in Hartland-Lakeside were closed. Prairie Hill Waldorf School is closed. Pewaukee is delayed two hours, including all bus lines. Arrowheads are scheduled to be virtual. Kettle Moraine schools, including Cushing Elementary School in Delafield, were previously scheduled to close for a day of professional development.

Lake Country School is closed for the day. They started with a two-hour delay and decided to close it after speaking with the sheriff, according to Administrator Mark Lichte.

A shelter advice was sent to a cell phone around 4:15 am. Residents are asked to go to shelter on the lowest floor of their residence.
