NEW YORK (AP) – Started in her bedroom with just a guitar, but Paris Jackson has been facing the pain of breaking up his solo debut album recently.
Jackson, 22, has been a devoted music fan all her life and has started making her own music, but has been hesitant to call herself a singer-songwriter to this day.
“It was one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever experienced,” Jackson told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview this week.
She describes her elegant acoustic sound as an alternative folk song ̵1; far removed from the genre of her father, Michael Jackson. Becoming the daughter of the King of Pop adds an extra layer of supervision to the hole needed to bring individual songs to the world.
“I’m happy, I’m worried, but I feel confident that those who are supposed to hear this recording will hear it. It will reach them. And as far as the critics and content are concerned, I don’t really think they’ll know how to criticize it, ”Jackson said.
Earlier this year, Jackson was part of the acoustic duo “The Soundflowers” with boyfriend Gabriel Glenn, until the two split up. She describes nursing a broken heart as literally “your chest hurts”, but Jackson has turned her pain into art. “You’re all mine / And now I’m falling to the ground,” she sang on her new single “Let Down”, released on Friday.
Her bedroom time led to 11 songs from the concept album, “Wilted”, released by Republic Records, and premiered on November 13th. All of the traumatic phases are expressed in her lyrics: anger, rejection, haggling and acceptance, but the last song, the upbeat song ” Another Spring, “revealed a stronger woman who let” her wounds shine. ” ”
Jackson cites many musical influences – including singer-songwriter Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne and Conor Oberst. Her eyes light up as she talks about being a huge fan of the independent rock band Manchester Orchestra. When she heard that guitarist-singer-songwriter Andy Hull from the band would produce her first record, she was delighted. She flew to Atlanta to work with him and said the band supported her sound.
“Everyone is very welcoming and kind and they consider this project very sacred. They understand my emotional connection to it and understand that this is my baby. They don’t want to do anything that is not true about who I am and they just take it to new heights, ”Jackson said.
Michael Jackson famously tried to shield his three young children from the limelight. After Jackson’s death in 2009 from an overdose of propofol, Paris and her two brothers – Prince, 23, and Bigi, 18 – went to live with their grandmother, Katherine Jackson. Paris moved out at the age of 18, both modeling and acting, but always playing music.
In June, she and Glenn had a series of documents on Facebook Watch titled “Unfiltered”, offering a glimpse of her private life and the duo’s mini acoustic tour. Jackson revealed self-harm and attempted suicide in her testimonials, and said music was a way to alleviate her pain.
There’s an upcoming music video alongside the new single “Let Down”, a nod to the horror and bloody love of the young Jackson. In it, the character she played was literally torn off her heart by her lover. One of the recurring scenes is set in a dark forest, reminiscent of elements in her father’s famous “Thriller” video. When asked what he might think of her music, Jackson replied.
“I don’t know. I am not him, so I cannot speak for him. But I hope he will be happy, and I think he will be fooled because I am happy,” she said.
The pandemic has eliminated most of the music activity and Jackson says she remembers listening to her favorite bands live and is looking forward to playing some shows soon, if anti-COVID-19 measures allow. She said she hopes the music will make people feel “a little less lonely.”
“I have found a lot of healing through this creation. And there are moments when I listen to certain songs again and I say, ‘Wow, I was naive.’ But for the most part, I get a lot of gratitude and joy from listening to these songs and just seeing the growth and evolution, ”she said.
