Owners of Westgate Mall and Asheville Mall filed for bankruptcy

Two mall operators filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Both have been hurt by the coronavirus pandemic that forced their tenants to close either permanently or not to pay rent. The CBL and the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust say their malls will remain open when they go through bankruptcy. Headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, CBL operates 107 malls across the US, including the Westgate Mall in Spartanburg and the Asheville Mall in Asheville. Philadelphia-based PREIT has more than 20 properties, including the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey. But the pandemic forced malls to close temporarily for months.
