Many of us expected BioWare to announce the Mass Effect trilogy on Day N7 today, but we weren’t expecting another news: A new Mass Effect game is in development.
Details on the project are extremely scarce, but BioWare is working on the “next chapter of the Mass Effect universe” and it will feature a “veteran team” from the company. It’s unclear who will be involved in the project, as original creative director Casey Hudson currently heads the entire studio. Mass Effect: Andromeda’s creative director, Mac Walters, appears to still be working with the company and a screenwriter for the original games as well as the Jade Empire.
Andromeda is not as well received as previous games, with criticism aimed at its plot, character animation, and mission design. In GameSpot̵7;s Mass Effect: Andromeda review, critic Scott Butterworth also noticed technical problems and disliked characters.
Since the studio is still in the early stages of the next Mass Effect game, it’s unlikely we’ll see too much of it in the long run – possibly years. Meanwhile, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is set for spring 2021 release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, with improvements available on Xbox Series X and PS5. It will have improvements to things like character modeling, textures, and shaders, but won’t significantly change the experience over the original trilogy.
