Researchers have developed a nasal spray treatment to prevent coronavirus infection in ferrets and could be used to protect people from SARS-CoV-2 infection, according to a report from The New York Times.
Small learn funded by the National Institutes of Health and Columbia University Medical Center but has yet to have a colleague’s detailed review of how the nasal spray protects mink from infection with the virus that causes COVID-19.

Six weasels were treated and placed in three separate cages in groups of two. Two placebo-given weasels were placed in each cage with one that was recently infected with a new coronavirus.
None of the animals were treated with the viral nasal spray after 24 hours, while the weasels were given a placebo with the virus.
“The viral replication was completely blocked,”; the study said.
The experimental preventive treatment is developed by researchers from Columbia University Medical Center, Erasmus Medical Center, and Cornell University. Researchers use ferrets to study respiratory diseases because they can be infected through the nose, just like humans.
“If it works well in humans, you can sleep in bed with an infected person or stay with your infected children and still be safe,” says Anne Moscona, pediatrician and microbiologist. Columbia University Medical Center and co-author of the study, told the New York Times.
Moscona says the spray attaches to the cells in the nose and lungs and is effective in about 24 hours. The team of scientists will need additional funding to conduct clinical trials of human treatments, the researcher said.
According to the New York Times, the study was submitted to Science for review.
Preliminary research comes as the world is racing to develop the COVID-19 vaccine amid a growing epidemic in the US and Europe.
On Thursday, the United States set a frightening new – pass COVID-19 record 120,000 infections a day.
