Microsoft spent last year perfecting the hardware and software experience for the Surface Duo, and the company now feels the device is ready for public release, ahead of the original “holiday 2020 timeframe”. Unfortunately, the wait from October 2019 until today means that the hardware inside doesn’t use the latest and greatest version.

Surface Duo specifications

Giant Redmond has confirmed that the Surface Duo ships with Snapdragon 855 and 6GB of RAM powering everything. It also has a 3577mAh battery and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 memory. While these are last year’s specs, the Snapdragon 855 is still a great processor that won’t show its age anytime soon.

Microsoft has also revealed details about the dual display of the Surface Duo, which is now confirmed to be an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1800×1350. They also feature 100% accurate color SRGB and DCI-P3, with a pixel density of 401 for a sharp and colorful viewing experience. Microsoft calls them “PixelSense Fusion Displays” and is designed to be identical so that images and applications look no different on both screens. It also supports Surface Pen, including the latest Slim Pen and older Surface Pen models.

In terms of cameras, the Surface Duo has a single 11MP sensor above the right display capable of recording 4K video. To be fair, this camera won’t rival the iPhone or the Pixel, as that’s not what Microsoft focused on this first generation. However, the camera app uses AI to optimize photos, which can improve everything.

Panos Panay, Product Manager, Windows + Devices, said the following about the Surface Duo in today’s announcement:
