Liberty University appointed acting president after Falwell applied for indefinite leave



Liberty University in Virginia announced on Monday that its board had selected Jerry Prevo as acting principal of the school after President Jerry Falwell Jr was given indefinite leave after a controversial photo.

Prevo, a former pastor at a Baptist church in Alaska, has served as the school’s board chair since 2003, Liberty said in a press release.

“I want to thank my members for believing that I could be assigned to assume the Acting Chair role during Jerry Falwell, Jr’s indefinite leave,” said Dr. Prevo. . “Please pray for us as the Falwell family as we begin our school year and that we may continue to be united in our common purpose and our faith in Christ.”

Falwell recently drew outrage from conservatives, including Rep. Mark Walker, RN.C., who had called for resignation after images appeared of him aboard a yacht with his arm. hug a woman and their pants come loose.

“Jerry Falwell Jr’s ongoing behavior is horrible,” Walker tweeted. “As a Member of the Music Faculty Advisory Board and as a former @LibertyU lecturer, I believe Falwell should resign.”

“None of us are perfect, but students, faculty, alumni and @LUPraise deserve better,” he continued.

The university announced in a brief statement Friday that Falwell will be on leave. The former Liberty University principal apologized for the photo while adding that the photo is “just for fun”.

“I apologized to everyone,” Falwell said in an interview last week with Lynchburg radio station WLNI.

He said that the woman in the photo is the “wife’s assistant” he was walking with.

“She’s pregnant, so she can’t put her pants on,” he said in the interview. “And I’ve been wearing jeans for a long time so I can’t pull the zipper either. And so I just pushed my stomach out like hers.

“She’s my wife’s assistant and she’s a lover, and I should never put that on and embarrass her,” he continued.

Falwell has led Liberty University since 2007, when he took over from his father, the late Father Jerry Falwell Sr., who founded the school. He is a key figure in the Protestant Christian community and helped garner President Trump’s support during his election campaign.

Prevo will take over the role immediately and is expected to work on the Lynchburg campus starting next Monday.
