Jets General Manager Joe Douglas voted for Adam Gase, calling the coach “part of the solution”. In the same interview, Douglas called Sam Darnold “midfielder for the future” of the Jets.
“I feel like he has a bunch of different receivers every week,” said Douglas, through NFL Media. “I think you’ll see what he can be, and they’re really special. Don’t forget that Sam is a 23-year-old defender, probably one of the toughest defenders I’ve ever met. I’m so excited about Sam.
“I have no problem saying he is the best full-back and our best full-back in the future.”
The Jets fans have had a miserable season, but thoughts of Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence as their future full-back have given them some sunshine. Lawrence predicts that the # 1 overall pick for 2021 and the Winning Jet are soon leading the way for the # 1 overall choice.
The Jets have made Darnold the third overall choice for 2018. He has an 11-21 record as a starter, with 39 touches, 34 interceptions and 78.3 passes. . Darnold has the worst passer-rating of any midfielder qualified this season.
“Look, I mean, we’re trying to get through the next eight games,” said Douglas. “My feeling about Sam hasn’t changed. We have to do better in surround him with talent. “
Rookie recipient Denzel Mims, the 59th overall selection, has played just two games this season. Keeping Mims in the squad helps Darnold, but Jets still looks a 0-16 side.
