Justine Ezarik, also known as iJustine, was recently joined by video by Apple’s iPhone line manager, Francesca Sweet. Francesca and iJustine discussed 5G – arguably the most important selling point for the iPhone 12 series.
The interview started with Justine talking about her first experience with 5G on the iPhone 12 and how much faster it was than LTE. Then, the two continue to discuss the different types of 5G users can now experience with the iPhone 12. It is millimeter wave (mmWave) and sub frequency 6GHz.
5G millimeter waves are the kind most people are talking about when they mention significant improvements in download speed over LTE. It’s faster of the two 5G categories, but it̵7;s also very unreliable in most places. The Sub-6GHz isn’t as fast as mmWave, but it’s much more reliable and usually faster than LTE.
Francesca reinforced this information when asked about the speeds to expect from the different types of 5G. She said, “On mmWave, we’re seeing speeds up to 25 times faster than LTE. Even on the Sub6, we’re seeing speeds up to two times faster than LTE. ”
The two also briefly discussed the iPhone 12’s new Dolby Vision 4K HDR video recording capabilities. Francesca pointed out that even with huge files from recording this type of video, users can still upload them continuously using 5G of iPhone 12.
It’s important to note that most people won’t experience the faster mmWave 5G. This is because it hasn’t been widely deployed yet, has a short throw distance, and has a hard time moving through things like buildings. So, if you’re planning on picking an iPhone 12, make sure to lower your 5G expectations a bit.
