ATHENS Georgia’s second year recipient George Pickens is expected to miss his second consecutive game, according to multiple sources.
Pickens, Sugar Bowl’s MVP with 12 catches of 175 yards in the 26-14 win over Baylor on January 1, continued to face an upper body injury.
It was the Bulldogs fifth full of injuries coming into the 3:30 p.m. game in Florida against the eighth Gators in Jacksonville.
Richard LeCounte, senior safety expert for Georgia, USA, will miss the match due to an injury in a motorbike crash last Saturday night.
Senior defensive player Julian Rochester is out of season after injuring his knee in Saturday̵7;s win over Kentucky.
Coach Kirby Smart said earlier this week he was hoping junior Jordan Davis could play a limited role after being knocked out of his match against Wildcats last Saturday with an elbow injury.
The other two starters left the injured Kentucky match, safe Lewis Cine (ankle) and midfielder Quay Walker (neck), expected to play, Smart said.
The Georgia head coach was asked for his confidence in the depth of defense against Florida during the coaches’ program on Thursday night.
“Not as confident as when I was in the Kentucky match, so sure, we just lost to some,” Smart said. “There’s a point there, I see people walking from the sidelines into the changing rooms, and I keep seeing them go, and I’m like, horrible, like ants parading.
“We got the boys in and out, in and out, letting those guys get X-rays and work, and that’s scary to say the least.”
Smart says the Bulldogs “don’t have the depth we used to have, but we have good footballers, and we’ll learn a lot about some of the guys as they get a chance to get promoted on Saturday.” “
According to many sources, Pickens injury occurs during weight training.
The former 5-star has seen his role diminish this season with red-shirted Stetson Bennett in midfield in midfield.
Pickens, a perimeter specialist, has only had 13 catches in 140 yards over the first four games he played.
Smart says Georgia is looking for ways to get Pickens to be more involved.
“We need him in the best position to get us to where we need to offend,” Smart said earlier this week, sparking optimism. Pickens may be in position to catch more money.
ESPN analyst Jordan Rodgers noted that he had only seen Pickens lined up in different receiving positions five times before the Kentucky match.
The Bulldogs’ offensive game plan has involved many shorter passes this season as Jake Fromm moved to the NFL.
Bennett has 7/20 passes within 275 yards with 2 touches of the ball and 2 interceptions for pitches 20 yards or more, according to previous data cited by 247Sports.
Bennett ranked 10th among the 14 starting SEC midfielders in terms of pass rates over 20 yards (14.3%), focusing more on short passes, where he connects with 72% of the his third throws.
