Former USC defender Cameron Smith needs open-heart surgery

Former USC support worker Cameron Smith announced on Saturday that he has an enlarged heart that will need open heart surgery and forcing him to miss out on the 2020 season with Minnesota Vikings.

Smith wrote on Instagram: “Earlier this week, I discovered that I needed open-heart surgery to repair the mitral aortic valve. “While this will unfortunately end my 2020 season, it is truly a blessing to have we noticed this as my heart has widened seriously and won’t last much longer.

“I found this out after I tested positive for COVID and had to go through more testing in the protocol. God works in mysterious ways, but I can really feel Him in this way. ”

Smith, who was selected by Vikings during the fifth round of the 2019 draft, said surgery will allow him to continue his career. Smith started four seasons with Trojan and was selected as Pac-12’s defensive freshman of the year in 2015.
