In each draft, every team has one (or two or three) regrets.
Some are bigger than others. Some are harder to explain than others.
Get the 2017 draft. Everyone knows Cowboys will take the lead after Benson Mayowa leads them with six sacks in 2016. It’s just which one.
When it was their turn, in final 28th place, the Cowboys had the right to choose Taco Charlton of Michigan or TJ Watt of Wisconsin.
Now it seems like a no-brainer, but Cowboys chose Charlton and Steelers chose Watt two options after that.
Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones admitted sorry on Friday.
Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “You always do that, if you’re honest and you’re honest – what you might have had.”
Watt has 41 careers, including 6.5 this season, and won the All-Pro title last year. Charlton lasted just two seasons in Dallas, spent time in Miami and now playing in Kansas City. He has had 11 caps for his career, including 2 caps for the captain this season.
Jones confirms what has been close to Dallas: Then defense coordinator Rod Marinelli wants Charlton.
Mike Nolan has replaced Marinelli as defense coordinator this season, and Marinelli is currently in Las Vegas as the Raiders’ defensive line coach. Cowboys has moved from Tampa Two to a more diverse scheme.
Watt will fit perfectly. (Of course, Watt will match any team in any scheme.)
“The harder part of that is [Watt] are in serious dispute [at No. 28], ”Says Jones. “I think the biggest problem is we played 4-3 there with Rod, and Rod is worried about how he will go up against a 4-3. [He] do not share the same interest as Taco. Obviously, if you had to do it again, I wish we would do it, and of course, he would probably fit better in some of the things we’re trying to do with coaching. Nolan members and our defense. So, you know, he is clearly a great player. He’s on his way to a great career, no different from his brother, and congratulates the Steelers for having him. “
