ST. GEORGE ̵1; While election day may have come and is over, the coronavirus reminded South Utah residents on Wednesday that it wasn’t yet.
There were 139 new COVID-19 infections in Southern Utah reported by the Utah Department of Health on Wednesday, the most in a day since the pandemic started in March.
Washington County leads new cases with 100 cases, while Iron County saw the first coronavirus-related death since September 25; a man aged 65 to 84 years was hospitalized.
The region and state have seen a steady increase in viral infections, hospitalizations and deaths since late September with no sign of abating despite the governor’s permission for additional restrictions. Public health restrictions on October 13 feature Washington, Beaver and Garfield counties under mandatory masking restrictions.
Hospital admissions peaked on Tuesday in Southern Utah, with 35 local residents hospitalized for the virus. That number dropped to 30 on Wednesday.
The state saw its second worst day since the pandemic began. A month and a half ago, Governor Gary Herbert announced in a press conference that the state would drop to an average of 400 new infections a day.
As of Wednesday, that average is 1,803 cases per day, with 2,110 new infections statewide and hospital admissions also hitting new highs.
