How the coronavirus surprised Italy

ROME – After being devastated by the coronavirus in the spring, the Italians viewed the ability to recover aspects of normal life as a matter of national pride.
They flock to open-air cafes and beach reservation spots. They wear masks, continue to use public transport and return to their offices. They are glad that they have successfully controlled the virus ̵
1; and pitied the Americans for not doing so. The resurgence of the worst pandemic in Italy appears to be a model for the world.
But now that Italy has been caught up in Europe’s second wave, once again startled by the virus, pride has given way to criticism and trust crises. More and more people argue that the country and the continent fooled their second chance.
