Israeli UFC midsize champion Adesanya spent the week talking to City Kickboxing teammate Carlos Ulberg, ahead of Ulberg’s appearance on the Dana White Contender Series.
As it turned out, the champion didn’t lie about his friend’s potential.
Ulberg (3-0) joined Adesanya among the UFC ranks on Wednesday, as he earned his UFC deal by defeating Bruno Oliveira (8-2) at UFC’s Apex facility in Las Vegas. Ulberg is one of only four athletes contracted to the promotion, as UFC president Dana White awarded contracts to each winner in a four-match card.
“Tonight is what you call a no-brainer,” White said, handing over four contracts.
New Zealander Carlos Ulberg beat Bruno Oliveira in the first round with his teammate and teammate Kiwi Israel Adesanya in the corner.
Even on the high-quality Contender Series card, Ulberg, from Auckland, New Zealand, stands out. A promising former MMA fighter to become a rugby fighter, Ulberg beat Oliveira with a left hook in the 2:02 minute of the opening half. He caught Oliveira with a left hook counterattack as he infiltrated, then doubled his punch on the knockout round. Ulberg’s second left hook caused Oliveira to fall to the floor.
“This kid is 2-0 and was fighting a guy who is 8-1 tonight,” White said of Ulberg, a 29-year-old light fighter. “He has a lot of kickboxing experience and easily beats a guy who has six kills and one submission. And you think he can market? He’s a handsome kid. “
In addition to Ulberg, who was cornered by Adesanya on Wednesday, the UFC has signed Chilean heavyweight athlete Ignacio Bahamondes, American featherweight Luis Saldana and American weight class Jared Vanderaa.
Bahamondes (11-3) defeated Edson Gomez with a direct kick in the face after 2:31 minutes of the second half. Gomez, who missed the weight for the weight-loss match, showed his heart taking a lot of damage throughout, but he was clearly inferior to the talented 23-year-old striker. White was delighted at the end, saying, “There’s no way in hell that isn’t [No. 1 play] on SportsCenter tomorrow. “
Luis Saldana caught up with Vince Murdock with a powerful kick at the start of the match in Round 3 of Dana White’s Contender Series.
Saldana (14-6) also scored a 44th-place goal in the third round against Team Alpha Male’s Vince Murdock. Saldana, 29, looked great in the first and second inning but did a mission in the third, leaving Murdock stunned with the stab and then wounding him with a direct kick in the face . Referee Herb Dean gave Murdock time to recover, but Saldana shot it off with a smash.
And in weight class, Vanderaa (11-4) got TKO in the first half convincingly against late replacement Harry Hunsucker. Hunsucker got into the knockout stages soon and had some success with the left hook, but Vanderaa, 28, overcame the storm early, knocked out Hunsucker and quickly finished him off with shots along the fence.
Wednesday’s episode was the first episode of Dana White’s Contender Series since Season 2, Week 8, with a 100% completion rate. This episode is Season 4, Week 8.
