This story is part of A gift guide for holidays 2020CNET chooses gifts with expert advice, reviews and suggestions on the latest technology gifts for you and your family.

Since we’re all stuck most of the time and get caught up in Zoom meetings and browser screens from our home office, the best way to take a break is to step outside. and read a book. Sure, e-books require a screen of their own, but some of our favorites use paper-like, easy-to-see E Ink screens.

And if you know someone who’s still addicted to the dead tree, I have a suggestion for them too (see bottom section on this list).

One important note: You should never pay the full price for an Amazon device, as they are routinely discounted throughout the year. We̵

7;ve included the official Date prices in relevant places below – we expect them to be back by Thanksgiving or Black Friday at the latest.

Yes, Amazon’s premium Kindle is too expensive for now – but that’s what makes it such a great gift. That’s an extraordinary upgrade from the standard Paperwhite reading. Last year, I upgraded in Prime Day, and was beaten by much better Oasis in terms of readability and responsiveness. Plus, the physical page-flip buttons are a lot better than swiping. Amazon does a lot of transactions on this, and pay close attention to the exchange bonuses on the older Kindle for it at a fair price.

Note that Oasis dropped to $ 175 during Prime Day in OctoberSo that’s the price to beat to shop on Black Friday. Read our Amazon Kindle Oasis (2019) review.

It hasn’t changed much in the past few years, but the latest Paperwhite is waterproof and has more storage capacity. I consider it the default Kindle for review. The backlight is excellent; Its size and weight make it highly portable.

Paperwhite bottomed out at $ 80 on Official Day – That’s the selling price worth hunting for. Read our Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2018) review.

I will not give way to it. This basic Kindle is nowhere near as good as Paperwhite or Oasis. But it’s also a great enticing gift for a casual reader or a beginner to eBooks. The latest version adds built-in lights, making it much easier to use.

Kindle entry level hits $ 60 on Prime Day – That is a preferential price for brand hunters. Read our Amazon Kindle (2019) review.

Amazon makes a number of different versions of its Fire tablet, and it’s basically the only low-cost small tablet I’d recommend. Fire tablets, including a slightly more premium 8-inch version, are great for video streaming and some basic games, but they also double as great ebook readers and a color touchscreen. make them especially suitable for digital graphic novels.

This product retails for $ 110, but it is periodically discounted down to between $ 80 and $ 90.

The best iPad for eBooks is the iPad Mini. The 8-inch screen and light weight are perfect (smaller than a book) and in addition to reading, you can do all the other great things – from games to movies to apps – you can do with iPad. Again, this isn’t an E Ink display, but an excellent high-resolution LCD display, and now has Apple’s True Tone technology to automatically adjust white balance.

Just keep in mind two important notes for this product: It usually sells for as low as $ 350, and the 2020 8th generation full-size iPad has almost identical specs for a lower price point. ($ 300 now and probably lower on Black Friday). You are paying a premium here for the small size and slightly better screen. Read more.

I have tried many book lights over the years and this is my favorite. It’s bright, rechargeable, has a very sturdy grip and a long neck. It can also stand up on its own, using the clamp as a support. It spreads around my house and my wife keeps stealing it, so I arranged a second for myself.
