When you run applications in the cloud, chances are you are actually running them in containers. And many of us don’t create our own popular applications container, such as the Apache Web Server, MySQL DBMS, or the Traefik cloud-rooted edge router. Instead, we just need to get them from Docker Hub or another popular container image repository. Unfortunately, for users who don’t want to pay for their images, Docker is not a charity. Starting in November, Docker began restricting Docker container pull requests for free authenticated and anonymous users. To get around this problem, Amazon Web Services (AWS) started working on its own public container registry.
You might think this is too much of nothing. I mean, how many pictures of containers can a company pull? The answer is that Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR) customers alone download billions of images each week. It is not a typo. Billion.

That’s great for you, but it’s not so great for Docker. Finally, anonymous users will be limited to 100 container pulls every six hours, and free users are limited to 200 container pulls every six hours. All paid Docker accounts – Pro, Team, and Legacy subscribers – are exempt from the rate cap. No drag speed limit will be applied to namespaces approved as non-commercial open source projects.
There’s no overhead when using Docker paid accounts – $ 5 a month for a personal Pro account and $ 7 a month for each user on a Team account. However, AWS will provide its own container image repository soon.
This will allow developers to share and deploy the container images publicly. The new registry will allow developers to store, manage, share, and deploy container images for anyone to explore and download. Developers will be able to use AWS to host both their private and public container images, eliminating the need to go beyond the AWS ecosystem. The public image will be geographically duplicated for reliable worldwide availability and provides a quick download to quickly deliver the image on demand.
Curiously, this move comes just months after Docker and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced they will make the lives of Docker app developers easier by streamlining the deployment process and manages containers from Docker Compose, Docker Desktop and Docker Hub to Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) and Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate.
Users outside of AWS will be able to browse and retrieve images contained in AWS for their own applications. Developers will be able to use the new registry to distribute public container images and related files such as Kubernetes Helm charts and policy configuration for use by every developer. AWS public images such as ECS agents, Amazon CloudWatch agents, and AWS Deep Learning Container images will also be available.
One thing AWS doesn’t seem to offer at the moment is automatically secured images. Docker and Snyk, an open source security company, have teamed up to find and eliminate security problems in Docker Official Images. Since you really don’t know what’s in a container image unless you bother to test it yourself for problems, this new provision of Docker and Synk is reason enough to pay for an account. Docker.
That said, developers who share images publicly on AWS will get 50GB of free storage per month and will pay nominal fees thereafter. Anyone pulling an anonymous image gets 500GB of free data bandwidth per month. What’s more, and you’ll need to sign up for an AWS account. So AWS container repositories will have their own limits as well.
However, simply authenticating with an AWS account increases the free data bandwidth up to 5TB per month when retrieving images from the internet. And finally, workloads running in AWS get unlimited data bandwidth from any region when pulling publicly shared AWS images.
Of course, AWS users aren’t the only ones having problems with the new Docker rules. For example, Google Cloud users may come across it without even realizing they are in trouble. Michael Winser, Google’s Cloud CI / CD product lead, wrote: “In many cases you may not know that the Google Cloud service you are using is retrieving images from the Docker Hub. Solution? In addition to the more complex approach, Winser suggests you simply “upgrade to a paid Docker Hub account.”

For many years, we have relied on the kindness of open source companies to provide us with free programs that we hope are reliable. Now that our automated workflows have put source code beyond our reach, we must take an active and responsible role in collecting and implementing more than just images. the Docker container on which all of the content we currently indifferently depend on our important programs.
