Annapurna, an independent media production company best known for producing award-winning video games and movies, is setting up an in-house game development studio to create its own projects.
The company ran a publishing business that started back in 2016 called Annapurna Interactive, and it is responsible for assisting in sponsoring and marketing some of the most beloved indie games of the past decade. These include Remains of Edith Finch, Kentucky Route Zeroand Wild outside, among many others.
Annapurna Pictures, the company’s cinema division, is even better known, winning numerous Academy Award nominations and wins for co-produced films such as She, American Hustleand Zero Dark Thirty. Now, Annapurna wants to create her own games with a brand new in-house studio.
“We are honored to be working with some of the most talented indie game creators in the world,” Annapurna Interactive President Nathan Gary said in a statement. “Many of us come from an in-house development background and are excited to make this part of Annapurna Interactive in the future. We can’t wait to share more about what’s coming – anything is possible. The new studio will be based in Los Angeles, and Annapurna is currently recruiting for an unnamed new project with the opportunity for the game director and senior producer.
This change represents a significant trend in game development, where it is sometimes more financially viable to produce in-house projects, rather than funding external projects to cut gains. profit and market them to a variety of platforms available on consoles, PCs, mobile, and now cloud games and subscription services. What kind of game Annapurna plans to make is still a mystery and it looks like it won’t be able to finish its first project for a while.
