President Donald Trump, whose campaign tried to prevent voting by mail, requested an absentee ballot that would allow him to pre-vote in Florida via the US Postal Service.
The request for remote voting as a resident of Palm Beach County, Florida, was confirmed by the White House Press Clerk Judd Deere on Thursday evening.
“The president favors absentee voting, not universal mail voting, which has some protections to prevent fraud and abuse,” Deere said via email.
The story of Trump’s request for absence, as well as that of first lady Melania Trump, was first reported by the Palm Beach Post on Thursday.
This will be the second time Trump and the first lady have asked to vote by mail as residents of Florida, where they call the Palm Beach resort Mar-a-Lago home.
Trump’s request will allow them to vote in the August 18 primary election. The deadline to request a absentee ballot is Saturday. Ballots must be returned by 7:00 pm on election day.
Palm Beach County began its early voting program on August 3 allowing voters to also use “safe” voting boxes.
The President has stated that vote by mail, used in the United States since the Civil War, resulted in fraud. According to numerous investigations and studies, there is no evidence of voter fraud as common in the United States.
Trump has so far resisted attempts by congressional Democrats to add billions of dollars to the U.S. Post’s budget to help fund the extra work needed to handle more bypass votes messages resulting from the pandemic.
But on Thursday the president suggested he would not veto the funding if it were part of the next coronavirus bailout, the Democrats said: “All they have to do is make a deal. . “
He also said of postal voting, “Good absenteeism, bad popular mailing.”
Some states, like California, Pennsylvania, and Nevada, do not distinguish between being an absent voter and a voter who only likes to mail; Anyone can request a mail ballot.
