Alex Smith will have his first game since 2018 when Washington plays against the Lions next weekend.
Head coach Ron Rivera made the announcement after Sunday’s 23-20 defeat to Giants. Smith arrived to relieve Kyle Allen after Allen injured his ankle in the first half.
Smith’s last start was on Week 11 of the 2018 season and it ended with a bad foot injury. Seeing Allen’s injury brought back some memories for Smith.
“Apparently a lot of emotion was going on for me right then and there. . . . Then they brought broadcasts and trolleys. I know that habit well, ”said Smith, through TheAthletic.com’s Ben Standig.
Smith was at 24-32 in 325 yards and a touch of the ball, but threw a pair of interceptions in the final minutes dashing the Team’s hopes of returning.
